HyLiST for all: What is LMNO and how is it applied in HyLiST?

HyLiST´s innovative approach seeks to deliver a cobalt-free Solid-State Battery based on (LMNO|HSIPE|Li) cells for automotive and aeronautic industries. But… what does it mean? Let´s break down the main concepts, step by step.

Current Lithium-Ion batteries rely heavily on cobalt, a metal that, while effective, comes with significant challenges. Cobalt is expensive, often linked to problematic mining practices, and increases European dependency on foreign supply-chains. The cathode is the positive electrode of a battery, which is a critical component that determines its performance. Instead of using cobalt, this innovative material is a unique blend of Lithium, Nickel, Manganese, and Oxygen (LNMO).

This is where a game-changing technology comes in: Cobalt-free LNMO Cathodes:

  • Sustainability: By eliminating cobalt, we reduce reliance on this mineral, paving the way for a more ethical and reliable supply chain.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Manganese and Nickel are more abundant and less expensive than cobalt, which helps drive down the overall cost of the battery.
  • High Performance: This specific LNMO composition is designed to be a “high-voltage” cathode, which means it can deliver more energy and power, contributing to longer range and faster charging in electric vehicles.

By integrating cobalt-free LNMO cathodes into their new generation of Solid-State Batteries, HyLiST is laying the groundwork for a future where battery technology is not only technically superior but also aligns with our values for a cleaner, fairer world.
