HyLiST for all: What is HSIPE and how is it applied in HyLiST?

HyLiST´s innovative approach seeks to deliver a cobalt-free Solid-State Battery based on (LMNO|HSIPE|Li) cells for automotive and aeronautic industries. But… what does it mean? Let´s break down the main concepts, step by step.

The batteries used nowadays typically rely on a flammable liquid electrolyte to move energy. While effective, this liquid is the main reason for safety concerns like fires and explosions in rare cases.

Hybrid Single Ion Conducting Polymer Solid Electrolytes, or HSIPE, is the core of the next generation of battery safety and performance. Here’s what makes it so special:

  • It’s Solid: Unlike a flammable liquid, HSIPE is a special solid material. This instantly removes the risk of leakage and thermal runaway, making the battery inherently safer.
  • It’s a “Hybrid Polymer”: It as a cutting-edge, flexible material, engineered with a hybrid composition to optimise its properties for battery use.
  •  It’s Super-Efficient: The “single ion conducting” part means it’s designed to be incredibly good at moving only the necessary ions back and forth. This leads to higher performance, greater stability, and a longer lifespan for the battery.

This innovative HSIPE technology is a central component of the HyLiST project’s Generation 4b high-voltage Solid-State Batteries. By pairing this safe, high-performance solid electrolyte with other groundbreaking materials, HyLiST is developing a complete battery cell concept designed to meet the rigorous demands of automotive and aeronautics use cases.
